Can Healthy People Get Strokes?

By Staff Worker

A stroke is a severe and life-threatening medical condition that occurs when blood supply to a part of the brain gets stopped. This condition may occur either due to a clot (ischaemic stroke) or by the bursting of blood vessels inside the brain (haemorrhagic stroke).

Stroke is a severe medical condition and requires immediate treatment. The sooner the sufferer receives medical treatment after a stroke, the better the chances of recovery.

Sedentary Lifestyle Leads to Stroke

When we hear about a typical stroke patient, our mind instantly thinks of someone who is elderly, overweight, possibly smokes, or does not exercise regularly. Although age and an unhealthy lifestyle significantly enhance the risk of getting a stroke, anyone of any age can have a stroke.

There is no doubt that unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and poor lifestyle enhance the risk of stroke. However, people who do not engage in any sustained physical activity and prefer living a sedentary lifestyle are much more vulnerable to stroke.

The question then is whether someone who takes good care of their diet, includes regular physical activity and exercise in their daily routine can get a stroke. Let’s find out the answer to this question.

What Causes Stroke in Healthy People?

Following are some of the causes of stroke among healthy people.

  • Haemorrhagic stroke

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs due to the defect in the blood vessels that have been present since birth. These time bombs present in the brain burst at any moment, which leads to stroke. An example of a hemorrhagic stroke is an arteriovenous malformation.

Arteriovenous malformation is a condition in which arteries get plugged directly into the veins. The pressure inside the veins gets too high for the blood vessels to handle. Eventually, they rupture and cause bleeding in the brain.

  • Sudden Peaks in Blood Pressure

Similarly, sudden peaks in blood pressure also act as a risk factor and lead to stroke among young people, especially those with blood pressure issues. Sometimes, even stress and anxiety can lead to blood pressure issues.

  • Irregular Heartbeat

An irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) can also lead to stroke. In such a condition, the heart beats so fast that it stops working, resulting in the supply of blood to the body stops—the blood pools inside the heart, clots, and travels to the brain leading to stroke.

  • Genetic Factor

Last but not the least factor that causes stroke among healthier people is the genetic factor. Generally, some people are more likely to have a stroke than others because they have inherited this disease, which runs in their families.

In conclusion, we can say that a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding or stopping smoking are some of the main things that reduce the risk of getting a stroke. However, some people living with the most nutritious lifestyles might get strokes while others who do exactly the opposite might not. So, we are not saying that healthy people can never get a stroke. The fact is that they are less likely to get a stroke as the risk factors are reduced if healthy lifestyle choices are embraced.
